The foundation proposes to launch a bouquet of programmes aimed at meeting the communication needs of the rural India. News and Views magazines and community radio networks for rural masses and TV programmes for building up public opinion to push for change in mindset and empowering the rural masses are some of the projects in the pipeline. Since, most of the current media programmes / newspaper stories are urban centric and populist in nature, there is a large untapped potential to bring rural development to centre-stage through sustained campaigns. Ultimately, the foundation would be a media powerhouse with strong academic and research back up to influence the development paradigm. This would be the first such venture in the cooperative sector as today’s media world is either managed by the corporates or state-owned agencies.

As part of this drive, Sopan Step, a bilingual magazine – both in Hindi & English, has been launched in October 2005. Already, seven issues have come out without break and the response from the public and the readers has been overwhelming. The Sopan Step has been objective in dealing with the issues relating to the rural sector. While highlighting the plight of rural people and their issues, the magazine has served as the forum to network with a string of grass root organizations, NGOs, rural youth clubs, women’s’ organizations as well as self-help groups.
